If you haven’t seen your dentist in more than six months, then you’ll want to continue reading below. In this guide, you’ll find information about the importance of regular dental cleanings that might make you change your mind about skipping your next appointment.

1. Possible Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection in the tissue of your gums. In the early stages of gum disease, you may not have too many obvious symptoms. One common symptom, however, is bleeding gums when your brush your teeth.

If it’s not treated in the early stages, then it can progress, destroying the gums and the bone tissue as well. When this happens, you may begin to experience oral pain, bad breath, loose teeth, or even tooth loss. When you allow gum disease to get to this point, it can eventually cause other health problems.

When you visit your dentist for regular cleanings, they can identify early signs of gum disease and then come up with a proper dental treatment plan to correct it. Gum disease can be reversed without any damage if caught early on. In return, you’ll save your smile and oral health.

2. Hidden Cavities

Even if you brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, you still want to see your dentist for routine dental checkups. Depending on how your teeth are aligned, it could be easy to miss a spot or have trouble reaching certain areas. If this happens, then decay can begin to grow.

As decay grows, a cavity forms. If this happens in a spot that’s difficult to reach or see, then it could go undetected for quite some time. In its early stages, the cavity might not cause you too much pain or discomfort.

If you allow it to go untreated though, it can eventually worsen and cause intense pain in the tooth it’s affecting. To prevent it from reaching this point, you’ll need to see your dentist on a regular basis. If a hidden cavity is forming, then your dentist will spot it and treat it.

3. Teeth Cleaning and Whitening

If you haven’t been to a dentist in over a year, then you might notice discoloration of your teeth. Stained or discolored teeth can be due to a variety of reasons. Certain foods and drinks such as tea and coffee can cause yellowing of the teeth.

Even with proper brushing and flossing, the stains may not go away. This is a good indication that it’s time to see your dentist. Regular cleaning is sometimes enough to turn your yellow teeth into pearly white ones.

If your teeth need even more attention to remove stains, then your dentist can even whiten your teeth for you while ensuring no damage is caused.

4. Oral Cancer Screenings

During your routine dental visits, your dentist will also screen you for oral cancer. This is a quick process, which you may not even notice. They’ll check your tongue, lips, face, and lymph nodes for signs of cancer. Although people who smoke or used to smoke are at a more elevated risk of oral cancer, anyone can have it.

You don’t need to be a smoker to be affected by it. When you visit your dentist you can have some peace of mind by knowing they didn’t find anything unusual.

5. Prevent or Treat Bad Breath

Have you been suffering from bad breath and can’t determine the reason why?

Do you have a buildup of dental plaque in your mouth around your teeth? Dental plaque is a breeding ground for bacteria that causes bad breath. Brushing alone won’t always remove stubborn plaque, unfortunately.

A dentist will use special tools to remove the plaque from your teeth, which then treats bad breath. They can then give you proper instructions moving forward to ensure plaque doesn’t form again.

6. Maintain Oral Health and Save Money

When you maintain good oral health, you eventually save money. Routine dental appointments help your dentist discover signs of oral health problems before they worsen. They can then treat the problems before they become more extensive.

Once an oral health issue becomes more extensive and worsens, the treatment plan will change and will most likely take more time and money to correct. Stay on top of your oral health by visiting a reputable dentist near you on a regular basis. Be sure to do your research and find a dentist who you trust and are comfortable.
