According to a Swedish prosecutor, all five occupants of the construction site elevator that plunged to the ground in Stockholm on Tuesday have died.
When the elevator in Sundbyberg, a suburb of Stockholm, collapsed 66 feet on Monday, the authorities had only previously stated that the passengers had suffered serious injuries. What caused the accident is still unknown. At the location, construction has come to an end.
Senior prosecutor in charge Gunnar Jonasson stated that there is a preliminary investigation underway, conducted by the National Accident Commission, among others, regarding possible “work environment violations causing the death of another.”
“This is a serious incident that we are now investigating,” Jonasson stated. He also said that efforts are being made to establish the deceased’s identity and that family members are being contacted by the authorities.
In the brief statement, the prosecutor did not elaborate on the manner or timing of the victims’ deaths.
The elevator’s manufacturer, according to a representative, has been producing them for more than 20 years; the company has never before experienced an incident of this nature, the Aftonbladet tabloid reported on Monday.
