Thomas Morris was a Scottish professional golfer who lived from April 20, 1851, to December 25, 1875. Tom was also known as Tom Morris Junior, Young Tom Morris, and Tommy Morris. Young Tom is considered a professional golf pioneer and the first child prodigy. He won four consecutive Open Championships before the age of 21.
Young Tom Morris Bio & Wiki Overview
For many years, it was assumed that Morris was born on May 10, 1851, based on a baptismal certificate, but his birth certificate was located in Edinburgh in 2006. As a baby, Tom relocated from St Andrews to Prestwick, where his father accepted a new golf professional and greenkeeper job.
Tom was a student at Ayr Academy until his early teens. The Morris family was growing increasingly affluent and, therefore, able to afford the costly private school fees, which ranged between £15 and £20 per year. Young Tom studied at the academy among the sons of noblemen and affluent merchants, and he put his education to good use in both his golf game and his connections.

Career
Morris began playing golf early on the Prestwick Golf Club links, laid out in 1851 by his father, the club’s professional and greenkeeper. He avoided the caddying and club-making jobs that were common entrance points for young players then; he was the first potential top player to do so.
Morris defeated his father for the first time at 13 in a friendly game at St Andrews in 1864; his father was the Open Champion then. In April 1864, shortly before his 13th birthday, Tom accompanied his father to a tournament at Perth’s King James VI Golf Club. However, he was not permitted to participate in professional or amateur divisions.
Instead, the organizers scheduled a match with a local young champion throughout the day. Young Tom won this match convincingly and was rewarded five pounds, a substantial sum at the time; a prominent gallery watched the two young stars. His match score would have been enough to win the professional event.
