Career
Yang won the Korea Open in 2006, earning him a spot on the European Tour and propelling him into the top 40 of the Official World Golf Ranking. He debuted on the PGA Tour in 2008, winning his first championship at the 2009 Honda Classic.
In 2009, he won the 91st PGA event, becoming the first Asian-born male golfer to win a major event. This win earned him a five-year PGA Tour exemption and helped him finish in the top 10 on the PGA Tour overall. Yang won the Volvo China Open in 2010, advanced to the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship quarterfinals in 2011 and was in contention for his third PGA Tour win at The Honda Classic in 2009.
He had a career high OWGR rating of 19th in 2010, but a succession of poor performances and missed cuts in 2013 and 2014 dropped him to 638th by the end of 2014. In 2015, he made the PGA Championship cut for the first time in many years, climbing to 262nd globally by November. After signing an incorrect scorecard, he was disqualified from the 103rd PGA Championship in 2021. He will join the PGA Tour Champions in 2022.

Yang was born on the island of Jeju-do. He is the fourth child out of eight. He began playing golf at the age of 19 while part-time collecting golf balls and then worked as a golf teacher at Jeju’s Ora Country Club. Yang learned through observing the actions of visitors to his golf club. Yang is a self-taught golfer, even though he currently has instructors.
His brother suggested he whack balls at a nearby driving range. Yang tumbled down a flight of stairs and tore his ACL while learning to operate an excavator for a construction firm to attain a “proper job.” After recuperating from his knee injuries, he entered required military duty in South Korea at 21.
After completing his military, he relocated to New Zealand to pursue a professional golf career. He became semi-pro on July 21, 1995, and pro on August 22, 1996. Yang has three boys with his wife, Young-Joo Park. He is the active proprietor of an indoor golf course in Dallas’ Koreatown neighborhood. He lives in Southlake, Texas, next to fellow South Korean PGA golfer K. J. Choi.
