Four members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus voted in favor of the budget bill amendment approved on Wednesday.
A Republican proposal to prohibit the use of the terms “Latinx” and “Latin-x” on federal papers was approved by seven House Democrats on Wednesday night.
Rep. Maria Salazar, R-Fla., proposed it as an amendment to one of the House GOP’s 12 yearly appropriations bills, this one allocating funds to the Treasury, White House, and judiciary.
It was approved late Wednesday by 222 votes to 198 “no” votes.
Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Yadira Caraveo (D-Colo.), Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Washington) were among the Democrats who voted for the amendment.
Three additional Democratic members of the House voted in favor of it: Representatives Jared Golden (Maine), Matt Cartwright (Pa.), and Mary Peltola (Alaska).
Following the passage of her amendment, Salazar released a statement saying, “The House just passed my amendment calling on [President Biden] to stop using the woke invention ‘Latinx’ on official documents.”
“This term tried to erase our centuries old culture – and as Hispanics, we’ve had enough.”
After being coined in progressive circles, the term “Latinx” denotes gender inclusiveness that surpasses that of the more traditional terms “Latino” and “Latina.”
The “Latinx” designation was preferred by barely 4% of Hispanic Americans, according to a Gallup survey from 2021. 57% of respondents, by far, claimed it made no difference.
“
On Wednesday night, however, several Democrats in the House heckled the amendment’s passing.
“In nine days, there will be a government shutdown. What does the House GOP want us to vote on this evening? – Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., posted an amendment on social media site X that “Prohibits funds from being used to produce official documents containing the term ‘Latinx’ or ‘Latin-x’.”
“Not much progress on keeping the government open or providing aid to Ukraine,” wrote Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat from Connecticut, “but the House GOP just passed an amendment forbidding the government from using the term ‘Latinx.'” Here, everything is similar to The West Wing.”
