A mother from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Friday for strangling her 10-year-old daughter to death.
During her May trial, Henrietta Rogers, 48, was found guilty of first-degree negligent homicide.
Fox 6 reported that in February 2022, police discovered Rogers’ 10-year-old daughter, Jada Clay, inside their home following an argument over Jada’s refusal to have her hair braided. After returning home from school, unlocking Jada’s bedroom door with a screwdriver, and discovering her lying on the floor, Jada’s older brother and sister called 911.
When police arrived at the site, the man looked to have been dead for several hours.
Prosecutors argued that strangling someone to death is a violently intimate act and asked for a 30-year prison sentence for Rogers. However, the defense requested less time, alleging Rogers had a severe mental health problem.
Judge Mark Sanders ultimately sentenced Rogers to 25 years in prison for her child’s death. Rogers will also be subjected to 15 years of extended monitoring, a mental health evaluation, and the requirement to seek employment during his probation. She was given time-served credit.
Sanders stated that he was at a loss for words in response to Rogers’ behavior.
“[Jada] was old enough to understand what was going on, and that realization must have made her final moments some of the most horrible I can imagine,” Sanders added.
