Who is Malo Gusto?
Malo Gusto was born in Décines-Charpieu, Franch on 19 May 2003. Gusto’s father forced him to play rugby when he was young in Villefontaine, Isère. Still, he quickly switched to football and is now a professional player.
Like his older academy teammate Amine Gouiri, Malo Gusto began his career at the ASVF before spending a year with Bourgoin-Jallieu and then enrolling in the Olympique Lyonnais youth program at the age of 14. Fortuitously, Gusto arrived in Lyon the same year his beloved club relocated to his hometown’s Stade des Lumières. He joined the French club on a professional contract in December of 2021, joining the likes of Florent da Silva, Yaya Soumaré, and Rayan Cherki from his generation. By that time, he had previously proven his worth in the Youth League and National 2 with the reserve squad before making a few appearances for Lyon Ligue 1 game under the supervision of Rudi Garcia.
On January 24, 2021, Malo Gusto made his professional debut for Olympique Lyonnais, replacing Bruno Guimares in their 5-0 Ligue 1 away win over Derby du Rhône rivals Saint-Étienne. Malo Gusto penned a new contract with Lyon in June, committing him to the club until 2024, after making another brief appearance in Ligue 1 at the end of the season.

During the summer 2021 pre-season, Gusto quickly emerged as one of Lyon’s most promising new prospects alongside Castello Lukeba. Gusto made his debut against Brest on August 7 as the official replacement for France international Léo Dubois. Several fullbacks left the club, including Melvin Bard, Mattia De Sciglio, and Maxwel Cornet. As a result, he became the club’s youngest defender to start a Ligue 1 game since Samuel Umtiti.
