Andrew Stuart Fastow, best known as Andrew Fastow, was born in Washington, D.C., United States, on December 22, 1961. Fastow was born into a middle-class Jewish family and grew up in New Providence, New Jersey. His parents, Carl and Joan Fastow, worked in retail and merchandising.

Andrew Fastow began his career at Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company, working at the newly emerging “asset-backed securities.” Due to his impressive work at Continental, Fastow landed a job at Enron Finance Corporation. He was hired by Jeffrey Skilling, who saw his talent, and he was named the corporation’s chief financial officer in 1982.

Fastow played a vital role with Enron with knowledge and expertise in market settings regarding deregulation in the U.S. energy sector. His contribution to the company quickly drew the attention of the then CEO, Jeffrey Skilling, and Enron’s founder, Kenneth Lay. Andrew later developed a complex web of companies that only traded to Enron to raise money for the company and hide its losses. With his complex system, the company’s audited balance sheet appears debt-free while it owes billions in reality.

While Enron was accumulating debts, Andrew was also busy diverting company resources to himself and through third parties. His actions led to the collapse of Enron, and he was eventually fired based on a board decision to remove him.

His actions led to legal consequences, and he was indicted by the federal grand jury in Houston, Texas, on 78 counts, including conspiracy, fraud, and money laundering. Andrew pleaded guilty to two counts of wire and securities fraud. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was also to be an informant and cooperate with authorities to prosecute his partners in crime for a reduced sentence. Andrews spoke to University of Colorado Boulder Leeds School of Business students on ethics and accounting practices. He also addressed many university students on ethics, including Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, the University of Southern California’s Leventhal School of Accounting, the University of Missouri School of Accounting, and The University of Tampa’s Center for Ethics. Fastow also addressed about 2000 anti-fraud professionals at the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners at a Global Fraud Conference.

He also invested in KeenCorp, a Netherlands-based company that offers analytics and intelligent products that monitor the workflow of digital tools such as emails, Google Suite, Microsoft Teams chats, and Slack.

Andrew was also featured in several books and reports. He was also featured in movies such as Enron: The Smartest Guy in Room, based on a book with the same title written by Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind.
