Career
During his career, Davis set several world records and won 31 national championships and 16 medals in international competitions. In the 200-meter breaststroke at the 1982 World Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador, he recorded his first world record and won gold.
During the 1984 Summer Olympics in LA, California, he claimed silver in the 100-meter breaststroke and gold in the 200-meter breaststroke, setting a new world record. In recognition of his achievements, Swimming Canada named Davis Athlete of the Year three times, and the Canadian government voted him a member of the Order of Canada.

Death
Davis was hit by a car driven by Glen Crossley, who fled the scene a few months after his retirement, on November 11, 1989, outside a nightclub in the Montreal neighborhood of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. Crossley told police that he hit Davis while attempting to avoid a juice bottle. Davis threatened to hurl at the vehicle, unaware he had made contact with the swimmer.
Other testimony indicated that Davis was struck from behind and hurled 14 meters (46 feet) in the air before landing on a parked car and a street curb. Two days later, the 25-year-old swimmer died in hospital from a severe skull fracture, brain hemorrhage, and spinal hemorrhage. Crossley was convicted of fleeing the scene of an accident in February 1992 and given ten months in prison, of which he served four months.
Legacy
Davis’s parents carried out his stated wish for his organs to be given to help save the lives of others. The swimmer’s heart, liver, kidneys, and corneas were transplanted. Since his death, the Victor Davis Memorial Fund has offered awards to young Canadian swimmers training while finishing their education.
