The recent surge in mysterious drone sightings over US military bases and sensitive installations has sparked concerns about national security and public safety. However, the Department of Defense (DoD) has reassured the public that these incidents are not a cause for alarm.
According to reports, drone sightings have been seen in at least six states: New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Virginia.
Pentagon officials have concluded that most of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft, operated lawfully, and do not pose a national security threat. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have corroborated this assessment, stating that many of the alleged drone sightings are, in fact, conventional manned aircraft.
In a joint statement by the DHS/FBI on reported drone sightings in New Jersey, they highlighted that there is no evidence at this time that the drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.
In the US, a total of 791,597 drones are registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In September 2023, the FAA changed the rules so that drones could fly at night. However, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas claims the change in the rules by the FAA may be one of the reasons for the increase in the reports of drone sightings at night in the US.
The Joe Biden administration has received backlash from members of Congress, senators, local officials, and President-elect Donald Trump, with many accusing the federal government of hiding the truth with their responses to the increasingly mysterious drone sight in the US.
On Friday night, President-elect Donald Trump, in a Truth Social post, criticized the Biden administration for withholding information about the drone sighting and edged for them to be shot down.
“Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country,” he wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform. “Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge. I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!! DJT.”
“They’re lying to us. First, they say you’re not seeing what you’re seeing. There’s nothing here, nothing here to be seen. And then they tell us that they don’t know what it is. They don’t know what’s happening. It’s all a lie,” New Jersey Assemblyman Erik Peterson told CNN on Saturday.
On Sunday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, wrote on X that he is “pushing for answers.”
“I’m calling for @SecMayorkas to deploy special drone-detection tech across NY and NJ. And I’m working to pass a bill in the Senate to give local law enforcement more tools for drone detection.”
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, also criticized the federal government for being responsible for the increasing drone sightings on Saturday.
“The government is in control of the drones and refuses to tell the American people what is going on. It really is that bad,” the Republican wrote on X.
House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Cory Gardner have expressed concerns about the lack of transparency and the potential for these drones to be used for malicious purposes.
While the DoD’s, FBI, and DHS reassurances may provide temporary comfort, it is naive to believe that the mysterious drone sightings pose no threat to national security. The fact that many of these sightings remain unexplained and the lack of transparency from the government raises more questions than answers.
