Two Wisconsin police officers were killed Saturday during a traffic stop after exchanging gunfire with the driver.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, a Chetek Police officer performed a traffic stop near Cameron, Wisconsin, shortly before 3:40 p.m. local time.
During the traffic stop, gunfire was fired, striking a Chetek Police officer and a Cameron Police officer. Both officers were pronounced dead at the site.
The other person engaged in the incident was taken to the hospital, where they died from their injuries.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice stated in a press release that the incident posed no threat to the public.
The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting, with assistance from the Barron County Sheriff’s Office, the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, and a DCI Crime Response Specialist, according to the release.
When the investigation is finished, the investigative reports will be given to the Barron County District Attorney.
Following the deaths of the two police officers, several law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin have extended their sympathies. Through social media, the Hudson Police Department, the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, the Milwaukee Fire Honor Guard, and the Village of East Troy Police Department all expressed their support.
