According to the local governor’s office, a submarine carrying Russian tourists sank off the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada, claiming the lives of six.
The submarine, Sindbad, had 45 Russian tourists and other crew members on board. The tourists were nationals from Russia, Norway, Sweden and India.
According to Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafi, six Russian nationals died, including four adults and two children.
The consulate said, “Most of those on board were rescued and taken to their hotels and hospitals in Hurghada,” adding that the fate of several tourists was still being clarified.
Russian tourists play an increasingly large part in the major hub for Egypt’s crucial tourism industry, the Red Sea, renowned for its coral reefs and marine life.
In November, 33 people were rescued while four drowned when a tourist diving boat was struck by high waves and sank within minutes. In June, another boat sank after storm damage; however, the Environment said no casualties were reported.
