1. Hiking at Big Bend

Big Bend National Park stretches out over 801,000 acres and offers basically any outdoor activity there is. This includes camping, boating, fishing, and more. Be sure to reserve campgrounds in advance, though, as they fill up very fast.

Big Bend is also a particularly great destination for hiking. It has over 150 miles of hiking trails, surrounded by beautiful, Texan nature. You can try a new trail every time you visit!

2. Horseback Riding

Nothing gets you into the true spirit of Texas like horseback riding. You might even say that the wide-open spaces of the second-largest U.S. state were made to be explored this way.

In fact, no matter where you are in Texas, there are always places where you can saddle up and ride. Just Google “trail rides near me” to find riding trails in your area.

3. Bass Fishing

Every state has something to offer fishing enthusiasts. In Texas, the big draw is bass fishing.

Texas has more inland water than most other U.S. states. More to the point, there are numerous lakes in which you can fish for various species of enormous bass.

4. Exploring Hueco Tanks

The Hueco Tanks historic site is an excellent destination for hands-on exploration. If you’re into rock climbing, for example, this site is a must for your bucket list.

It’s also a preferred site for experienced or novice cave explorers. One of the main spectacles of Hueco Tanks is the ancient cave drawings that can still be seen today. You can purchase guided tours of these caves or bring your equipment and go spelunking.

5. A Spelunking Adventure at Enchanted Rock

The Enchanted Rock State Natural Area also offers a unique experience for spelunkers. The enormous pink granite rock formation contains a 1,000-foot cave for you to explore.

However, this really isn’t a trek for beginners or those with claustrophobia. Much of this excursion requires crawling and sliding through small openings in order to proceed.

Spelunking aside, the giant mound of pink granite is a sight to behold. You can book a camping trip and bring your family. Or stay at a hotel and just drive out to it for a day.

6. A Beach Day at Padre Island Seashore

Tired of visiting crowded beaches? That won’t be a problem at Padre Island National Seashore.

This beach is over 70 miles long, offering plenty of room for every family to lay down their picnic blankets. Simply drive along the coast until you find a sparsely populated spot to spend the day.

Even better, visitors who are used to the chilly waters of the Pacific coast are in for a pleasant surprise. The coastal waters at this Texas beach are warm enough to swim in during most seasons of the year.

7. Wade Around in Lower Laguna Madre

Those of you with young children can take your little ones to the Lower Laguna Madre area of the Padre Island seashore. Here, the waters are shallow and calm enough to allow a safe swimming environment for your kids. Other favorite activities at this site include kiteboarding and kayaking.

8. A Nature Walk Through Big Thicket

Nature lovers won’t want to miss Big Thicket. It’s the oldest National Preserve in the country.

There, you’ll spot hundreds of plant and animal species as you explore within 100,000 acres of carefully preserved forest. Thus, there’s no better place to go on a nature walk than Big Thicket.

9. Unbelievable Scenic Beauty at Lost Maples

Actually, if any location can rival the natural beauty of Big Thicket it’s Lost Maples, especially in the fall. Maple trees are known for displaying beautiful colors as their leaves change in autumn.

As such, Lost Maples envelopes visitors in a spectacular rainbow of autumn beauty during this time. For the entire duration of your visit, you’ll feel you’ve been whisked away to an enchanted forest.

So, be sure that you don’t forget to free up space on your phone for lots of pictures. Also, campsites are available.

10. Camp at a State Park

If there’s one thing this list has made clear it’s this. No matter where you go in Texas, you’re not far from sparsely populated nature/camping opportunities. Sites like Stephen F. Austin State Park and Garner State park are perfect for first-time visitors.

Most of the areas we’ve mentioned on this list offer campsites. And there are still hundreds of others that we haven’t mentioned. So, if you’re planning to visit Texas in the near future, consider booking a campsite instead of a hotel.
