Herman Melville was born in New York City, United States, on August 1, 1819. He was a renowned American novelist, short story writer, and poet. He is best known for his novel “Moby-Dick,” regarded as one of the greatest novels ever written. Melville’s work gained the recognition it deserved posthumously.

His parents were Allan Melvill and  Maria (Gansevoort) Melvill. He was the third child of the couple’s eight children.

Melville’s career began with his experiences at sea, which influenced his writing. At 19, he sailed on a merchant ship to Liverpool, and later, in 1841, he joined the whaling ship Acushnet. His adventures in the South Seas provided the material for his early works. His first novel, “Typee” (1846), based on his experiences in the Marquesas Islands, was an immediate success, followed by its sequel “Omoo” (1847).

Herman third novel, “Mardi” (1849), was poorly received. Undeterred, Melville continued to write, producing “Redburn” (1849) and “White-Jacket” (1850), which found moderate success.

In 1851, Melville published “Moby-Dick,” a romance adventure. Despite its later success, the novel was poorly received initially. His subsequent novels, “Pierre” (1852) and “The Confidence Man” (1857), were not successful.

Financial difficulties forced Melville to take up a position as a customs inspector in New York City in 1863 when he returned to the United States. During this period, he turned to poetry, publishing works like “Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War” (1866), which reflected his views on the Civil War. His later years saw the publication of the epic poem “Clarel” (1876) and the unfinished novella “Billy Budd,” which was published in 1924.
