Tips to Rodent-Proof Your House

People care a lot about their homes – and rightfully so. Emotional bonds are forged and amazing memories are made inside those four walls, so homeowners are naturally protective of their sacred places.

As a homeowner, you need to keep your house safe from a variety of potential dangers, from burglars to harsh weather conditions. At the top of this list of dangers is – of course – rodents. Rodents are enough to freak out even the toughest people in society. After all, there’s nothing scarier than the thought of opening your bedroom door to find a rat has taken over your bed!

You don’t need to worry, though, as making your house rodent-proof has never been easier than it is today. To help you out, here are some top tips you should follow. And don’t worry, these tips are low-cost and easy to do.

Ensure your attic is safe and secure

Rodents love attics, mainly because of the insulation. Also, they can hide out of sight for months and even years in attics. It’s enough to send shivers down your spine.

Securely store your food and drink

Aside from somewhere to live, rodents also invade homes for food and drink.

So, for the best possible protection, you need to securely store away your foods, from cereal to fruits. You can place them in contains or in closed cupboards that can’t be accessed. This way, you’re starving rodents of any potential meals and so they won’t have any real reason to stick around.

Also, remember to tidy up any food or drink that has accidentally been dropped on the floor. Rodents thrive off crumbs and the tiniest crumbs of food, so don’t allow any laziness to tempt them in.

Block any potential points of entry

Of course, the only way rodents can get inside your house is if there’s an opening. This might be a gap underneath your door, or a ground window that’s accidentally been left open. Rodents are persistent little animals, and will find any means necessary to get inside – so don’t make life easy for them.

Seal up any holes or gaps you can find as soon as possible, especially if it’s winter time. This will help to keep you and your pets safe.

Efficiently manage your garbage

Garbage is attractive to rodents. After all, they don’t care if it’s dirty. In their eyes, it’s a potential meal.

So, make sure to efficient manage your garbage by putting all your waste into trash bags and disposing of them weekly.

Whatever happens, remember to never leave trash bags laying around outdoors or in the house, as this is an open invitation to rats and other potential rodents.

Communicate with your neighbors

If you’re friendly with your neighbors, it’s a good idea to keep each other up-to-date surrounding any house issues – particularly those that concern rodents.

For example, if your neighbor experiences a rodent outbreak in their house, they’ll be able to inform you about it. This way, you can then prepare accordingly so that they don’t migrate over to your property, too.
