Pressure mounts on Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea recorded their second successive away defeat this season.
Leeds United defeated the blues on match day 3 of the Premier League. The blues recorded another defeat against Southampton on Tuesday at the Saint Mary’s stadium.
Chelsea has conceded five goals in their last two Premier League away matches. Chelsea switched from a back three to a back four because of an injury to Reece James. With Hakim Ziyech, Raheem Sterling, and Kai Havertz leading the Chelsea attacker.
However, former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy believes Hakim Ziyech was not good enough and should not start for Chelsea again.
What did Jason Cundy say about Hakim Ziyech?
Jason Cundy, who was also a co-commentator for the Chelsea game on Talk sports said: “Right now, the transfer window is still open, there’s a lot of knee-jerk reaction about who’s going to do what and who’s going to do this in the season, right now I feel a little beaten.
“When the window shuts and we’re 10 games in when the European competitions start and we get into it and the World Cup comes around, it will level out. Right now, we’re not good enough. There’s no getting away from it. We’re not good enough.
“But you look at some players that started tonight—if everyone’s fit and everyone’s playing—there are some players starting tonight that wouldn’t [normally] start… Ziyech, don’t start, he ain’t good enough.
“Right now we’re in a hole. There’s cause for concern. We’re in a bit of a sticky situation.”
Jason Cundy also urged Thomas Tuchel to hand Broja Armando a start following his impressive performance after coming on.
“Broja, can I just say how brilliant he looked when he came on? Borja’s got to start at center-forward, a proper center-forward. I don’t mind Havertz, he won the Champions League for us, but Broja’s got to start.
“If Chelsea had a striker, a focal point for 90 minutes, and did the work that he [Che Adams] done, I would say Chelsea would be a different team.
“Our best player tonight was Borja. It may not be acceptable, but it’s true. It’s hard to say it. Do I want to say that someone who came off our bench was Chelsea’s best player?”
Thomas Tuchel started the game with a four-back instead of his usual three-back. However, Jason Cundy has slammed Tuchel’s decision to play four back.
Jason continued: “Tonight you saw exactly why we need [Wesley] Fofana.
“He played a four tonight, he started with a four, Azpi, Koulibaly, he’s an experienced player but he needs time, and Thiago Silva the three of them… I thought Che Adams was the best player on the pitch, he caused us no end of problems, without actually doing anything in the box, center-forward play, he was just… and we kept dropping off him, why are we dropping off him?!
“Why did we play a four? You’ve got Azpi, Koulibaly, Silva, and Cucurella. There’s your back four. I thought the first 15, 20 minutes we looked decent, but once we scored Che Adams seemed to scare us to death, we kept dropping off him.
“I can’t quite understand why Tuchel started with a [back] four when he’s had so much success and done so well with a three. I know Reece [James] was missing, and I know we’re a little bareback there at the minute, but there are ways around that.
“I’m not going to deny tonight we were dreadful. There’s no getting away from it. I can’t hide.
“The last three games… away at Everton should’ve been a draw, Leeds pulled our pants down, Southampton beat us fair and square, should’ve beaten Spurs but we didn’t, we got away a little with Leicester, we went down to 10 men and it could’ve been different.”
