Friday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott spoke to the state’s Republican County chairs about the recent decision to construct floating barriers along the Rio Grande in an effort to reduce illegal immigration.
According to Fox 7, during his speech in Georgetown, Texas, Abbott discussed his administration’s response to the influx of illegal immigrants entering the state through the U.S.-Mexico border.
Abbott stated, “I will do whatever it takes to defend our state against the invasion of Mexican drug cartels and others who have attempted to illegally enter our country, and I will protect our sovereignty.”
As part of Operation Lone Star, the governor boasted about his recent decision to construct a floating border wall in the Rio Grande.
“It’s called Operation Hold the Line,” he explained. “They are holding the line and ensuring that no one illegally enters the state of Texas.”
After Abbott refused to remove the buoys, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Texas. The government charged the governor with breaking federal law, calling his 1,000-foot-long barrier “unlawful construction.”
This comes as Texas continues to send migrants by bus to sanctuary areas across the country, including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. D.C. Abbott has previously stated that migrant relocations will continue until the federal government resolves the border situation.
“I challenge the federal government to show me where they have spent that much money on the border in the state of Texas under Joe Biden as president,” Abbott said on Friday.
“He gave me a lawsuit, and by God, Joe Biden, we will see you in court,” he continued.
Protesters gathered outside the governor’s home in Austin on Friday to oppose Abbott’s floating border wall.
