Authorities say a youngster in Texas committed suicide while playing an internet game as a result of alleged cyberbullying.
A boy teenager from Michigan was identified as the suspect and “pled true to a felony charge of aiding suicide and a misdemeanor charge of harassment causing death,” according to a statement issued by the Montgomery County Precinct 3 Constable’s Office on Friday.
Because of their ages, authorities hid the children’s names.
According to the agency, the investigation began in January when deputies were summoned to a residence in the Lockeridge Farms community for a complaint of a suicide. The kid was still wearing a gaming headset and “appeared to be online at or around the time of their death,” investigators said.
Detectives tracked down the juvenile suspect using search warrants and interviews with members of an online gaming group from other locations. The matter was reviewed by the Montgomery County Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors say the 16-year-old defendant tormented the victim until the kid committed suicide, according to CBS station KHOU in Houston. According to the news station, the suspect accepted a plea agreement in the case and will be on probation until the age of 18.
“The Montgomery County Precinct 3 Constable’s Office takes investigations regarding cyberbullying seriously and will continue to investigate these cases to the fullest extent,” the constable’s office stated in a statement.
