He was born on April 24, 1882, in Moffat, Scotland, to Arthur John Caswall Dowding and Maud Caroline Dowding and died on February 15, 1970, at the age of 87. 

Dowding began his military career in the British Army, where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery. During the First World War, after completing his training at the Central Flying School, He became a pilot in the Royal Air Force and later a Flight Commander.

He was appointed commanding officer of the RAF Fighter Command in 1936, and he played a central role in modernizing and reorganizing Britain’s air defense system. However, during the Second World War, Hugh Dowding was asked to serve from his retirement in 1939 until 1940 and also served during the Battle of Britain.

After his retirement from active service in 1942, Dowding continued to advocate for air defense’s importance and RAF personnel’s welfare. In 1943, he was made a peer for his services to the nation. Later in his life, Dowding was a deeply spiritual man with a keen interest in the supernatural, both in writing and speaking. He was a devout Christian who believed in spiritualism and authored several books.

Hugh Dowding married twice. First, he married Clarice Maud Vancourt in 1918 and divorced in 1920. Then, in 1951, Hugh married humanitarian and animal rights activist Muriel Whiting until Dowding died in 1970. He had only one child.

Clement Freud was a renowned German-born British broadcaster, writer, politician, and chef. He was born on April 24, 1924, in Berlin, Weimar, Germany, to Ernst L. Freud and Lucie Freud.

Freud’s family fled Nazi Germany when he was a child, settling in London, England. After completing his education at the St Paul’s School, Freud embarked on a diverse and illustrious career.

During the Second World War, Clement served in the Royal Ulster Rifles. Clement Freud was a famous chef in the UK. He worked in the Dorchester Hotel and later became a renowned restaurateur. Clement owned and managed several successful establishments, including his celebrated restaurant in Sloane Square, in London’s West End. He wrote numerous cookbooks and contributed food-related columns to various publications, including “Grimble.”

In addition to his career as a chef, Freud was a prominent figure in the broadcasting world. He became a regular panelist on the popular BBC Radio 4 show “Just a Minute,”  

Freud’s political career was equally noteworthy. From 1973 to 1987, he was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Liberal Party, representing the Isle of Ely constituency.

In 1987, Clement Freud was knighted for his service to the catering industry and the nation. He continued to be active in public life and philanthropy until his death on April 15, 2009, at the age of 84.

Clement Freud was married to actress and theater director June Flewett. They had five children.
