Co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever, has dropped a truth bomb that’s equal parts prophecy and panic: “AI is going to be both extremely unpredictable and unimaginable.” Even the experts are now blinking nervously at the Frankenstein they helped code.
According to Sutskever, artificial intelligence is only the beginning of a future that could quickly become unpredictable and unimaginable. He says it is both a massive opportunity and an uncontrollable force beyond current human understanding.
In a recent interview with The Open University of Israel, Sutskever painted a future where AI systems begin improving themselves—fast. So fast, in fact, that human oversight might become a quaint memory. He predicts a tipping point where AI’s evolution spirals beyond our comprehension.
Sutskever’s comments came shortly after he accepted an honorary degree from The Open University. He estimated a breakthrough into true superintelligence could happen in “three, five, maybe ten years.” He said what comes after is unclear.
He added that “the rate of progress will become really extremely fast for some time at least. Whether you like it or not, your life is going to be affected by AI to a great extent.”
While Sutskever acknowledged the risks, he also believes AI could revolutionize healthcare, cure diseases, and extend human lifespans. He said, “If the AI became capable enough, we’ll have incredible health care,” adding that diseases could be cured and human lifespans extended.
Sutskever also revealed that the age of AI is unlike any other moment in history. So, should we be excited? Terrified? Or both?
