Career
Saul Rubinek started giving performances at the Stratford Festival in 1969. He contributed to the Toronto theater scene by helping to start the Canadian Stage Company and acting and producing for Theatre Passe Muraille. In the 1970s, he started appearing in Off-Broadway shows in the US. He received a Drama-Logue Award in 1984 for Des McAnuff’s As You Like It production in La Jolla.
Rubinek rose to prominence in Canada as Detective Benny Cooperman in two television films, The Suicide Murders (1985) and Murder Sees the Light (1986). Rubinek appeared in Obsessed (1987), Liberace: Behind the Music (1988), Soup for One (1982), Against All Odds (1984), Sweet Liberty (1986), Wall Street (1987), The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick (1988), The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), and True Romance (1993). Rubinek co-starred as Dr. Jim Curran in the Emmy Award-winning American made-for-television docudrama And the Band Played On in 1993. He portrayed Kivas Fajo in Star Trek: The Next Generation in the episode “The Most Toys.”
In the 2000 film The Family Man, Rubinek played Alan Mintz opposite Nicolas Cage. Rubinek starred in The Golden Spiders: A Nero Wolfe Mystery, the pilot for the 2001-02 A&E TV series A Nero Wolfe Mystery, in 2000. Rubinek debuted in the short-lived American television series Blind Justice in 2005, and from 2006 to 2012, he played Hasty Hathaway in the Jesse Stone TV series.
