Sarah Joseph is a Malayalam novelist and short story writer born in India in 1946. Her novel Aalahayude Penmakkal (Daughters of God the Father) won her the Kendra Sahitya Akademi and Vayalar awards. She is at the forefront of Kerala’s feminist movement as the founder of the activist organization Manushi.
In 2014, Sarah Joseph joined the Aam Aadmi Party and stood for parliament in Thrissur.

Sarah Joseph was born in 1946 in Kuriachira, Thrissur, to Louis and Kochumariam, into a traditional Christian family. At fifteen, she married while in ninth grade. She began her career in teaching by enrolling in a teacher training program.
She then finished her B.A. and M.A. in Malayalam as a private candidate and joined collegiate service in Kerala. She taught Malayalam at Pattambi’s Sanskrit College. She then resigned from her government job and resided in Mulamkunnathukavu, Thrissur. Her daughter, Sangeetha Sreenivasan, is also a published novelist.

She began seriously writing while still in high school. Her poetry has appeared in several Malayalam publications. At poets’ conferences, poets like Vyloppilli Sreedhara Menon and Edasseri Govindan Nair lauded her reciting talents.
A trilogy of her writings includes Aalahayude Penmakkal, Mattathi, and Othappu. Valson Thampu’s English translation of the original Othappu is Othappu: The Scent of the Other Side. For her novel Aalahayude Penmakkal, she got the Vayalar Award, the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, and the Kerala Sahitya Academy Award. She was also awarded the Cherukad Prize.
Her most well-known work is Ramayana Kathakal, a retelling of the Ramayana. This work is now available in English through Oxford University Press.
Her collection of short stories, Papathara, won the Muttathu Varkey Award in 2011. In addition, for her work Ooru Kaval, she received the inaugural O. V. Vijayan Sahitya Puraskaram in 2011. In 2012, she received the Padmaprabha Literary Award.
