He is the only child of Elizabeth Harriett, a factory worker who later worked as a supply buyer for a mental institution. Samuel was also raised by his maternal grandparents, Edgar and Pearl Montgomery. He attended several segregated schools before graduating from Chattanooga’s Riverside High School.
