Roof Rack: The Do's And Don'ts
SHARE

Now that you own a roof rack or box, you’ll need to know a few things. More specifically, there are do’s and don’ts to be aware of. These do’s and don’ts include:

Do Read The Instructions Carefully Before You Fit Your Roof Rack

If you start a job without reading the instructions, then you could end up finding out later on that what you’re doing actually requires two people. Reading instructions beforehand can save a lot of hassle. While you’re at it, make sure you keep the instructions within reach, and always keep all the components that came with the rack or box nearby. This will make things a lot easier on yourself.

Before you set off, you need to read the manufacturer’s recommendations in regards to storage and usage. Remember, all of these recommendations are based on results from testing out the product. In turn, the instructions will clearly state what is suitable use for the rack or box, and what kind of items shouldn’t be used on the rack or box.

Do Load Things Correctly

Loading a roof rack or box is a lot different than loading items into your car’s trunk. You have to be extremely careful when it comes to storing items outside of your vehicle because you don’t want the load to move around. On that note, the load needs to be distributed evenly.

The majority of roof boxes on the market are equipped with internal straps. These straps can be used to secure your items. Once the items are loaded onto the roof rack, make sure you use the straps to secure them.

Using non-standard equipment on your car does come with warnings. As a result, there may be issues that arise when you load items onto your roof rack. At least that’s the case if you load things improperly.

Don’t Rush The Job

Every single component of the roof rack has a specific job to do. You need to install all of these components properly. Once you buy the roof rack, make sure you carefully open the package it is in. Don’t start the installation process until you are 100% sure you have every single part, which includes all of the small bolts and nuts.

When you’re ready to install the roof rack, don’t rush things. Take your time. It’s a good idea to check-off each step you complete.

Don’t Neglect The Locks

Roof racks and boxes from Yourcarparts come with locks. Do not neglect using these locks, regardless of how secure you think your items are. Things can turn for the worse when you’re doing 70mph on the highway, and you don’t have your rack or boxed locked.

Roof racks can take a battering when travelling at fast speeds. If you don’t use all of the locks, you’ll find this out very quickly when you get onto the highway. Plus, if something were to happened you would need to convince your insurance company that you took steps to prevent losing your items. The chances are your insurance company won’t be convinced.

Don’t Overload The Roof Rack

This might seem obvious, but don’t overload your roof rack or box. Each make and model can only carry so much. Capacity has been tested out on each roof rack and box, so make sure you are well-aware of what your product’s capacity is.

Figuring out just how much your contents weight can be difficult. Generally speaking, you should really load the rack with lighter and softer items and bags. This reduces the risk of overloading the rack or box.

Don’t Choose A Rack You Can’t Easily Load/Unload

Some racks come with rollers that make it even easier to unload and load contents onto it. These types of racks are usually designed for commercial vehicles and vans. If you get this type of roof rack, you might be able to fit it onto your vehicle, but you probably won’t be able to use all of the components of it because it wasn’t designed for your car.

Consider what kind of items you will typically load and unload onto the rack. You might need to restrict the weight of each item that will be going on top. However, doing thins carefully and taking precautions are worth it because it reduces the risk of injuring yourself.

Don’t Think You Can Drive Normal

Do not make the mistake of thinking you can drive as you usually drive when your box or roof rack is fitted. Remember, the rack or box will affect the balance of your vehicle. Your car will end up handling differently as a result of having to carry more items than it normally carries.

The extra weight your car will carry will impact its ability to brake. For example, it will take a few seconds longer to come to a full stop when you’re carrying items on your roof rack. Keep this in mind when you are driving, especially when you’re on the highway.

Those are the do’s and don’ts of having a roof rack or box. If you want to remain safe on the road, then keep the above information in mind. It will help you reduce the chances of having an accident or injuring yourself.
