Manchester United were keen on signing 17-year-old Jude Bellingham in 2020 when he was in Birmingham City before he decided to join Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga for £22.75 million.
The Red Devils, in their attempt to sign Jude Bellingham, asked Sir Alex Ferguson to speak with Bellingham’s family on two different occasions during a tour at the Manchester United training center.
However, Manchester United failed to bring Jude Bellingham to Old Trafford. Jude was able to live up to the hype that made Burossia Dortmund pay such a huge amount for a 17-year-old. His impressive performance for Dortmund drew the interest of almost all European top clubs to him. However, he finally decided to join Spanish giant Real Madrid for a fee of £88.5 million with a £10.5 million add-on.
Rio Ferdinand has revealed that Manchester United failed to convince Jude Bellingham as they were unable to assure him of a spot in Manchester United’s first team.
What did Rio Ferdinand say about Jude Bellingham’s failed transfer to Manchester United in 2020?
Ferdinand said on his Youtube channel Vibe with Five: “Do you know what I heard it was… he [Bellingham] wanted some assurances about being a first-team player.
“And United weren’t willing to give him those assurances, that’s what I heard from a very good source.
“He wasn’t given assurances of being around the first team and he’s said, ‘do you know what, I know my worth, I know my value and if you don’t value me the way I see myself I’m going to have to jog on and go to another club.
“He’s gone and done that and he’s turned round and gone, ‘I told you guys, you didn’t believe me did you?’. ‘And he’s gone Real Madrid and he’s tearing down Real Madrid, he’s turning down the Bernabeu, they’ve just rebuilt it and he’s tearing it down! Unbelievable.”
