Chelsea’s recent struggles continue after Borussia Dortmund defeated the blues in the first Leg of the Champions League at Signal Iduna Park. Graham Potter’s side has now won only two games in their last 14 games.
The blues had dominated the German side on their own turf but failed to score despite creating more chances on the night. Kai Havertz, Joao Felix, and Kalidou Koulibaly were all close to scoring for the away side. This is not the first time Chelsea has failed to utilize their chances despite completely dominating their Opponent.
Premier League legends Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher have revealed that Chelsea’s failure to sign a proper number nine during the transfer window despite spending over £600 million. Chelsea has no natural number 9 in their Champions League squad after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was omitted from their 25-men list for the knock stage of the Champions League.
What was said?
Rio Ferdinand said on BT Sport:” I think he’ll [Potter] find some positives in there. He’ll be saying, “Slowly but surely, we’ll get it right.”
“They haven’t got a No.9 in this team. They spent all that money in the last two transfer windows and didn’t get an out-and-out No.9. That’s the problem.
“Long term, I think he’ll go and get that. They’re doing everything up to that point really, really well. The way the team’s been able to pass the ball through the lines and get into those really good areas.
“But again, they got undone by a clinical bit of finishing which they didn’t have in their own team.”
Liverpool Legend Jamie Carragher also said on CBS Sports: “When you actually think of the money Chelsea have spent, not just in [January], in the August window as well, and to think you’re playing a full season without a recognized, top-quality centre forward, it’s just baffling.
“You think, “It’s £600m being spent, and you don’t have someone at the top end of the pitch who can score a goal”.
“Chelsea’s massive problem this season has been scoring goals. I think they’ve scored just more than maybe one goal a game in the Premier League, and that’s nowhere near enough for a club the size of Chelsea and also, the revenue that’s been spent on that team, that’s a massive problem.
“Considering Chelsea have spent £600m and they don’t have a centre-forward is just crazy and that game summed it up. They need someone who can put the ball into the back of the net.”
Chelsea still have a chance to qualify for the stage of the Champions League if they can overturn the 1-0 defeat to Dortmund when they meet again in the second Leg at Stamford Bridge on 7 March. Graham Potter’s side will now have to turn their attention to their Premier League clash with Relegation battling Southampton on Saturday.
