Chelsea’s Premier League struggles continued on Saturday at Stamford Bridge as the Blues were defeated 1-0 by relegating battling Southampton.
Graham Potter’s side has now won two games in their last 15 games.
The Blues are still 10th in the Premier League and still 10 points behind fourth-place Newcastle United, who also lost to Liverpool at the St. James Park. Chelsea endured a terrible first half against Southampton and was dominated by managerless Southampton.
James Ward-Prowse’s brilliant free kick in 45 minutes was enough to give the visitor the three points despite Chelsea’s improved performance in the second. The blues created enough chances in the second but couldn’t equalize.
Paul Merson has revealed that Chelsea star Mason Mount “got eaten up” by Southampton and had a game to forget and was replaced in the 64th minute by Kai Havertz. Mason Mount has been struggling this season, and the game against Everton sums up the England international’s poor form this season.
What did Paul Merson say?
The Arsenal Icon said on SkySport: “I don’t see this stopping, I don’t.
“They’re bought a lorry load of individuals, I’m afraid. They’ve not bought anybody for the team, and it’s all dribblers.
“Forget Enzo Fernandez, and he’s a top player. He’s a holding midfield player but the others… Mount played today, and he got eaten up.
“People were dribbling, there were no phases of the game, it’s only when [Kai] Havertz came on, and he started playing with [Joao] Felix and [Raheem] Sterling that there were passages of play.
“But I don’t see this stopping. I think this is a massive, massive, massive interview now coming up for Graham Potter. Chelsea fans will be fuming. They won’t want to come for this, ‘oh, Southampton have got a new manager, so that helped them.’
“If you don’t beat Southampton at home their goalkeeper should be the best player on the pitch and he wasn’t the best player on the pitch.”
Meanwhile, Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Chelsea to sack Graham Potter following his comment after Chelsea’s defeat.
Graham Potter said at a press conference after the game : “You have to see it for what it is. We had to make some changes because of the Champions League.
“We’ve had to make some changes because of the situation we’re in and boys coming back from injury.
“When you make those changes, it can be difficult against a team that is well prepared.”
Gabby Agbonlahor was not happy with Graham Potter’s comment said on Talk Sports: “He should be sacked for that post-match interview.
“What are you talking about? They haven’t got a manager, and you’re playing a team in disarray who can’t get back-to-back wins together.
“You’re complaining that you’ve had to bring Mykhailo Mudryk off the bench and start Joao Felix? Are you joking with me?
“Poor Graham! Poor you, Graham… Wow… I think as well… There is an English bias.”
