The Kashmir Police have identified three suspects behind the Pahalgam attack. According to a statement released on April 24, 2025, two of these militants are Pakistani nationals, while the third is believed to be a local Kashmiri with ties to Pakistan. The police have announced a ₹20 lakh reward for information leading to their arrest.
The attack took place in the picturesque Baisaran meadow, often called the ‘Mini Switzerland’ of Kashmir on April 22, 2025. On Tuesday afternoon, at around 2:30 PM, a group of heavily armed militants opened fire on unsuspecting tourists. This resulted death of 26 lives lives , including Indian citizens, a Nepali national, and an Intelligence Bureau officer from Hyderabad. Over 20 others were injured. Eyewitnesses describe a scene of chaos, with gunmen firing 50 to 70 rounds using AK-47s and American-made M4 carbines.
The suspects named by the police are Hashim Musa alias Sulaiman, Ali Bhai alias Talha Bhai, and Adil Hussain Thokar. Two of them, Hashim Musa alias Sulaiman and Ali Bhai alias Talha Bhai are from Pakistan.

The militant group “Kashmir Resistance,” also known as The Resistance Front (TRF), claimed responsibility for the attack. In their message, they expressed strong dissatisfaction over the settlement of more than 85,000 “outsiders” in the area.
India has taken several diplomatic actions in response. The government has downgraded its ties with Pakistan, expelled military, naval, and air advisors from the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi, and suspended its role in the Indus Water Treaty, a crucial water-sharing agreement between the two countries.
