Joshua Zimmerman took up residence in the Chicago restaurant Seafood Junction.
According to officials, a murder suspect who escaped from a Mississippi courthouse in June was apprehended in Chicago on Wednesday morning following a confrontation with law enforcement at a restaurant a few blocks away from the Democratic National Convention.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Joshua Zimmerman locked himself inside the Seafood Junction restaurant, which is located around 0.5 miles from the United Center, the site of the conference.
Since his escape from the circuit court building in Hernando, Mississippi, where he was being detained on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery, Zimmerman has been sought after by the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the agency.
Zimmerman was also awaiting extradition to Houston, Texas, where authorities claimed he was facing murder charges, at the time of his escape.
There was no sign of any connection to the DNC, and it was unclear how officials had followed Zimmerman to Chicago.
Authorities think Zimmerman was employed by the eatery, according to FOX32 Chicago. It is believed that Zimmerman holed up in the ceiling during an hours-long confrontation with police when local officials went to check a lead at the eatery on Tuesday afternoon.
The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office in Mississippi’s top deputy, Justin Smith, said reporters that the goal of the authorities is to return Zimmerman to Mississippi and “gather the remaining facts surrounding his escape.”
