Michael Collins was an Irish rebel, soldier, and politician who played a vital role in the war for Irish independence in the early 20th century. His full name in Irish was Micheál Coileáin, and he was born on October 16, 1890, and died on August 22, 1922.
During the War of Independence, he served as a cabinet minister of the self-proclaimed Irish Republic and as Director of Intelligence for the Irish Republican Army (IRA). After that, he served as Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State from January 1922 until he died in an ambush in August 1922, which occurred during the Irish Civil War. He also served as commander-in-chief of the National Army from July till his end.

Michael Collins was born on October 16, 1890, at Woodfield, Sam’s Cross, County Cork. Michael John, his father, was a farmer and amateur mathematician. He claimed his ancestors were descended from the U Chonaill Gabra and credited James Santry and Denis Lyons for inspiring his Irish patriotism. His moniker “the Big Fellow” has many anecdotal reasons. Collins’ relatives dubbed him “The Adventurer” as a youngster.
At 13, he enrolled at Clonakilty National School and began working on the family farm. He came to London at 15 after passing the British Civil Service exams. He attended King’s College London and was a London GAA and IRB member. He went to work for the Guaranty Trust Company in New York in 1915.
