FAfter graduating from William & Mary Law School, Matt worked at Keefe, Anchors & Gordon (now AnchorsGordon) in Fort Walton Beach. Due to unpaid fees, the Florida Bar suspended him from practising law and reinstated him after he paid the $265 fees. Matt ran in the special election to succeed Sansom in the 4th district after Republican state representative Ray Sansom’s resignation in March 2010. For a full term in 2010, he was unopposed. Two years later, he was re-elected, and later in 2014.
In 2013, he announced his plans to run for the 2016 1st District state Senate seat held by his father, Don Gaetz. However, he withdrew from the election, choosing to run for the U.S. House seat representing Florida’s 1st congressional district instead. On August 30, 2016, Matt won the Republican primary with 35.7% of the vote to Greg Evers’s 21.5% and Cris Dosev’s 20.6%, along with five other candidates.
