Trump will be charged with 37 crimes related to how he handled secret information on Tuesday.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, said Monday that she would introduce a bill to cut funds for special counsel Jack Smith’s office and his probe into former President Donald Trump.
On Monday, Greene said on the House Floor, “Today, I’d like to announce that I’m writing an appropriations rider to defund special counsel Jack Smith, his office, and the investigation.” “This is a weaponized attempt by the government to get rid of Donald J. Trump, the top political enemy and leading candidate for president of the United States.”
Attorney General Merrick Garland asked Smith to look into how Trump handled the secret papers he took from the White House and took to Mar-a-Lago when his term ended. This was done in November.
Greene’s news comes the same day that 37 charges against Trump related to the secret papers and claimed obstruction of justice will be read in court in Miami, Florida.
Greene said that Smith’s investigation of Trump is based on politics, and he said that Trump and Democrats, who were also found to have taken secret information, were treated differently.
“We can’t let people use the government as a political tool,” she said. “I also want to ask my coworkers to help me with this. We have to use the power of spending to stop the government from being used as a tool, especially since we know other people have done absolute wrong.
She also said that how the Justice Department treated Trump’s case was similar to how it investigated Hillary Clinton when she was Secretary of State.
She said, “An investigation should have been done into that.”
Greene also talked about secret papers that used to belong to President Joe Biden but were taken away when he was vice president and were later found in the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C. At his home in Delaware, more of his papers were found.
A special counsel, Robert Hur, is looking into how Biden handled secret papers.
Greene said, “Don’t forget that Joe Biden’s papers are in his garage next to his Corvette, where the door opens and closes.” “America sees this for what it really is, and we won’t stand for it.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, agreed with Greene’s idea.
“This is an article I’m proud of! In answer to her words, he wrote on Twitter, “I’m so down with it.”
Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., said on Sunday that the House should use the Holman Rule, which lets changes to spending bills that would fire or lower the pay of specific government workers or cut particular programs.
“Congress can and should hold the Biden DOJ accountable by defunding their efforts during the appropriations process, using the Holman Rule to remove and defund corrupt officials, and keeping an eye on its baseless investigations,” Biggs said in a tweet.
Smith said that Trump intentionally took secret papers with him when he left the White House in January 2021. The charge was 49 pages long.
Smith said these documents contained “information about the defense and weapons capabilities of both the U.S. and other countries, U.S. nuclear programs, potential weaknesses of the U.S. and its allies to a military attack, and plans for possible retaliation in the event of an attack from another country.”
Smith’s office also said that the former president discussed the secret information with others. The special counsel said he also put them in dangerous places like a ballroom, a bathroom with a shower, an office, his bedroom, and a storage room at his club and home in Mar-a-Lago.
