Joseph D. Whaley, a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, was identified as the service member who passed away at Camp Pendleton while participating in a training exercise.
Whaley, a local citizen of Maury County, Tennessee, was shot and died on Thursday while participating in a live-fire training exercise. According to a statement released by the United States Marine Corps, he is now in the fourth week of the thirteen-week Basic Reconnaissance Course (BRC).
According to Major Joshua J. Pena, Basic Training and Combat is comparable to an orientation for new recruits in the Marine Corps. The military asserts that Whaley was a 0300 Infantry Student throughout his time in the service.
After completing rifleman training at the United States Marine Corps School of Infantry East located on Marine Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Recruit Training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island located in South Carolina, Lance Corporal Joseph D. Whaley enrolled in the Basic Reconnaissance Course located at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California. Both of these training programs are part of the United States Marine Corps.
The National Defense Service Medal is one of the honors that have been bestowed upon him.
