India-Pakistan ceasefire

The India-Pakistan ceasefire had barely lasted a few hours before explosions were reported in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The ceasefire was brokered by international players, including the United States. It was hailed as a breakthrough after days of deadly cross-border attacks. However just hours later, loud explosions, artillery fire and attack drones were witnessed in Srinagar and Jammu, with both sides pointing fingers at each other for violations.

President of the United States, Donald Trump announced the full and immediate” ceasefire on his Truth Social platform on Saturday. He added that it was brokered by the United States.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri accused Pakistan of repeated breaches. India’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) sent a hotline message to Pakistan. The DGMO warned that any further breaches would be met with a decisive response. Meanwhile, Pakistan insists it remains committed to the agreement despite what it calls ‘Indian provocations.’

This isn’t the first time a ceasefire between these nuclear-armed neighbors has been tested. Since their partition in 1947, India and Pakistan have fought multiple wars, with Kashmir remaining the most contentious issue. And now, history seems to be repeating itself. Experts claim that the problem is neither side fully trusts the other.
