Career
Scutaro signed as an amateur free agent with the Cleveland Indians on July 26, 1994. Scutaro’s favorite player as a youth was Cleveland infielder and fellow Venezuelan Omar Vizquel, whom he would frequently watch during spring training.
On August 30, 2000, the Indians dealt Scutaro to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers discarded him at the start of the 2002 season to make room on their roster for Nelson Figueroa. On April 5, 2002, Scutaro was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets. In 2002, he hit 319 with 22 doubles, 28 runs batted in,48 runs scored, and 7 home runs in 97 games with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.
He was also named to the International League squad for that summer’s Triple-A All-Star Game. After leaving the New York Mets, Scutaro played for the Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and San Francisco Giants. While playing for Scutaro, he recorded the first hit in Target Field history, a single up the middle against Minnesota Twins starter Carl Pavano in the opening inning.
