Marcel Sabitzer, a midfielder from Bundesliga rival Bayern Munich, joined Borussia Dortmund on Monday, bolstering their options following the departure of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid.
Sabitzer, 29 years old, inked a contract through June 2027 and will travel to the United States on Tuesday to join his new Dortmund compatriots on their summer tour.
Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl stated, “He perfectly fits the profile we were looking for a box-to-box central midfielder who will strengthen us defensively and offensively.” “Not only is Marcel physically robust, but he also poses a significant goal threat.
“We are confident that, due to his personality, he will become an important pillar of our team and help us become even more effective, particularly in tough matches.”
Reportedly, Dortmund paid Bayern 15 to 20 million euros ($17 to 22 million) for the midfielder.
Before accompanying his coach Julian Nagelsmann to Bayern in 2021, Sabitzer excelled for Leipzig. He was ultimately loaned to Manchester United for the second half of last season after failing to secure a place in Bayern Munich’s star-studded midfield.
The Austrian international scored two goals in 54 competitive appearances for Bayern Munich and 14 Premier League and Europa League appearances for Manchester United.
Sabitzer is Dortmund’s second midfield addition following the acquisition of Felix Nmecha from Wolfsburg to replace Bellingham. The club replaced left-back Raphal Guerreiro, who joined Bayern, with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Ramy Bensebaini.
