This week, a man touring the Grand Canyon and walking across its viewing platform fell to his demise.
The 33-year-old fell from the canyon’s “Sky Walk” attraction, a walkway that extends out over the chasm and enables tourists to peer down into its depths.
The individual fell over 4,000 feet, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.
“At 9 a.m. on Monday, the technical rope rescue team from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue responded to the Grand Canyon West Skywalk for a 33-year-old male who had fallen into the canyon from the Sky Walk,” the sheriff’s office said.
Officials launched a rescue operation, including a helicopter, but the victim was pronounced dead at the site.
“Two short-haul technicians (rope specialists) responded to the scene with a Kingman DPS Ranger helicopter and determined that the man was deceased,” the sheriff’s office said. “He was extracted from the Command Post and transferred to the Hualapai Nation.”
It is not immediately apparent whether the man committed suicide or died in an accident. The tragic incident has been the subject of an investigation.
