Democratic Rep. Karen Bass has taken the lead in the closely disputed Los Angeles mayoral race over billionaire businessman Rick Caruso, but there are still hundreds of thousands of votes to be tabulated.
According to the most recent Los Angeles County Registrar’s Office results, Bass is leading Caruso, a former Republican, by 4,384 votes, with 289,782 votes (50.4%) to 285,398 votes (49.6%).
However, approximately 40% of the ballots have yet to be counted, and the contest is still too close to call. According to the Registrar’s Office, voter turnout will be around 27%.
On Friday, Los Angeles County election officials anticipated that more than 800,000 ballots needed to be counted. There are around 790,000 mail-in ballots, 21,000 conditional voter registration ballots, and 300 provisional ballots.
