Early life
Kirk Dewayne Franklin is a 53-year-old musician. He was born in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, on January 26, 1970. When Kirk was born, his parents were still in their teen years. So, he was just three years old, when his mother left him. His aunt Gertrude raised him afterward.
When Kirk was seven years old, he got his first contract, but his aunt denied it.
Franklin received his education at Oscar Dean Wyatt High School, where he took music classes from Jewell Kelly and the Singing Chaparrals.

Career
Kirk Franklins joined the church choir when he was 12 years old and later became the Mount Rose Baptist Church’s music director for the adult chorus.
In 1992, Franklin founded “The Family,” a seventeen-voice choir composed of neighborhood friends and allies.
Vicki Mack-Lataillade, a co-founder of the young record label GospoCentric, first heard one of their demo tapes in 1992 and was so impressed by them that she immediately offered a recording deal to Franklin’s 17-voice choir, “The Family,”

God’s Property sued Franklin on November 2, 1998. Franklin was accused of pressuring God’s Property founder Linda Searight into signing an “onerous and one-sided” deal with B-Rite Music, according to the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Members of The Family sued Franklin and GospoCentric Records for millions of dollars in royalties for their contributions to The Nu Nation Project in 2000. This incident caused the end of the “Kirk Franklin & The Family” records. Kirk went on to become a solo artist after this.

2019 GMA Dove Awards controversy
Franklin stated that portions of his acceptance speech that were removed from the broadcast of the 2019 GMA Dove Awards on October 20 by Trinity Broadcasting Network were related to the police officer’s killing of Atatiana Jefferson.
He announced that he would no longer attend the award ceremony since they had previously edited his speech to remove “reflections on police violence against Black Americans.”
GMA President Jackie Patillo later apologized to Franklin. GMA released an unedited version of the speech explaining that it was a mistake and that they were trying to shorten the length to fit two hours. Other artists joined Franklin in his boycott.
