Raheem Sterling becomes Chelsea’s first major signing of the summer and the first under Todd Boehly’s era. Chelsea paid £ 47 million for the England international on a five years deal. The 27-year-old is expected to earn £300,000 a week at Chelsea.
Sterling enjoyed a successful career at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola winning four Premier League titles, FA Cup, two FA Community shields, and four Carabao. The 27-year-old England international made 337 appearances for Manchester City scoring 131 goals and providing 94 assists in the process.
However, Chelsea legendary duo John Terry and Joe Cole have expressed their excitement about Chelsea signing Raheem Sterling and they expect the former Manchester City forward to bring their experience to help the blues fight for trophies.
What was said?
Speaking on the Chelsea signing of Raheem Sterling via BBC Sport, the former Chelsea playmaker Joe Cole said: “Chelsea are getting one of England’s best players in the prime of his career at a good price.
“It’s a great bit of business. It helps us in the final third of the pitch – he’s a goalscorer and he can help the young players.
“We are very young in that area – Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic. Raheem is five or six years older than them, has more games under his belt, and has been around the block.
“He can help with the leadership group as well. He’s part of the leadership group for England. We’ve lost Antonio Rudiger, so he will be very important on and off the pitch.”
Former Chelsea Captain John Terry also took to Instagram to react to the signing of Raheem Sterling, saying: “Welcome to Chelsea, Raheem.
“What a signing this is… good luck mate.”
Meanwhile, Joel Cole has also revealed his time with Raheem Sterling at Liverpool when he was young.
Joe Cole added: “He’s a great man now but was a great kid.
“He was very mature, very driven, and a fantastic talent. He was one of those where you expected him to become a player.
“The longevity he has had is incredible and he’s still young. Arguably, Chelsea could be getting him in his best years.
“Raheem is a leader, a quiet leader,’ he adds, ‘and he gives us experience in that area of the pitch. We have it with Thiago and Azpi at the back, but now we have more at the other end of the pitch.
“His dynamism, he makes things happen, his running behind. He is a fantastic timer of runs into the box and is technically very good. He can take a man out with his dribbling which is vital. He is an all-rounder, he gets goals, and he makes goals. He makes a difference in big games, that’s what we need.”
Chelsea co-owner and acting Chairman Todd Boehly also spoke on the signing of Raheem Sterling via Chelsea’s official website, saying: “Raheem is a serial winner and his signing is an important step in strengthening our squad.
“We are delighted for Raheem to return to London with Chelsea, and we look forward to seeing his world-class talent on display at Stamford Bridge.”
Raheem Sterling is expected to make his debut for Chelsea on Saturday when Chelsea faces Club American.
