Graham Potter was appointed Chelsea manager earlier in the season to replace Thomas Tuchel following the German coach’s run of poor results and perceived misunderstanding with the new Chelsea owners.
The sacking of Thomas Tuchel was greeted with disappointment from Chelsea and pundits on social media. Chelsea appointed Graham Potter on a five years deal worth €60 million. The aim was to build a long-term project with Graham Potter similar to that of Manchester City and Liverpool.
Potter’s reign as Chelsea’s manager started on an optimistic note. The England tactician was unbeaten in his first ten games for the West London club. Things began going worst for Chelsea, especially in the Premier League, as the blues went on six games with a win and dropped out of the top six. Chelsea was eliminated from the FA and Carabao Cup but managed to top their group in the Champions League.
Chelsea decided to finally sack Graham Potter after they defeated by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League over the weekends. The defeat to Aston Villa pushed Chelsea to 11 in the Premier League. Chelsea has also recorded only three wins in 2023.
However, Premier League legend Jamie Carragher has slammed Todd Boehly’s decision to replace Graham Potter with Thomas Tuchel.
What did Jamie Carragher say?
The Liverpool Icon vented his anger on Twitter: “Todd said he would be different from Roman.
“I feel for Graham Potter, but it was inevitable. You don’t change Tuchel for Potter. Ridiculous decision to start with.”
It was reported later on Sunday that Chelsea has officially opened talks with former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann. The German is reported to have started to be taking English lessons. Former Barcelona and Spain Manager Luis Enrique and Former Tottenham manager Pochettino are all among the coaches being considered for the Chelsea Job.
Meanwhile, Jamie O’Hara claims Graham Potter’s inability to manage a big personality at Chelsea is the reason behind his struggles.
He said on Sky Sport: Chelsea are 11th – for me, it’s unacceptable.
“The amount of money they’ve spent, [co-owner] Todd Boehly has come in.
“I know you’ve invested in Graham Potter. You had to get him away from Brighton, but he’s miles off it. The players are not responding to his tactics.
“The teams he picks from the start are strange. He’s constantly changing it. Then the subs he makes in the second half are all over the place.
“I don’t think these players are having Graham Potter. What I’m seeing from this side and the players that are there, I think he’s struggling with big characters.
“He’s not used to having big characters at Brighton, Graham Potter.”
Since Chelsea is yet to appoint a new manager, Bruno Saltor has been confirmed as the interim manager of Chelsea. He will be in the dugout against Liverpool on Tuesday.
