If you find yourself in this situation, there is no need to worry or despair. There are several methods for recovering images that have been deleted from a PC or a Mac within 30 days of their deletion. And that is because they exist in the “Recently Deleted” folder during that time. Once the retention period of 30 days expires, the deleted images are permanently wiped out from your hard drive.

So what can you do if you land up in such a situation? How can you restore photographs that are deleted from the Recently Deleted folder? This post will show you how to recover deleted photos after deleting from Recently Deleted.

Reasons for losing photos from the Recently Deleted folder

1.    Hardware failures

Hardware failures are the most common source of data loss, accounting for nearly half of all such cases. These typically include Hard Disk Drive (HDD) / Solid State Drive (SSD), Computer Memory (RAM), Motherboard, Processor (CPU), or Power Supply (PSU) problems. Data loss is possible if a disc storage device that physically stores the files and photos fails.

2.    Human errors

When engaging with files, people may inadvertently remove essential information. The operating system provides two options for completing the file deletion procedure: files can be erased by transferring them to the Recycle Bin, or erased permanently by using Shift + Delete keys. The operating system warns users of potentially harmful actions, but most users ignore the warnings and proceed with deletion only to regret it later.

3.    Software crashes

The following are the most common kinds of software crashes:

  • During the process of backing up files, an error may occur. This can result in failure to access the file copies after the original files have been erased.
  • File corruption can occur as a result of a failure in file editing software.
  • Another typical cause is a failure during the bulk-saving method, in which some of the files are updated to the most recent changes while the rest files and photos are destroyed.
  • An antivirus application may flag “good” files and photos as malware and remove them accidentally.

Solutions to recover photos after deleting from Recently Deleted

Concerned about how to recover photos from recently deleted? The methods listed below have been tried and tested for the purpose.

1.    Restore pictures with iCloud

The following steps can assist you with retrieving photos from iCloud:

  1. On the iPad, go to Settings -> General -> Reset, and then choose Erase All Content and Settings.
  2. Choose Restore from iCloud Backup from the Apps & Data
  3. In the pop-up box, sign in using your Apple ID and passcodes. Then choose the most appropriate iCloud backup from a list of available archives.
  4. Open the Photos app and keep your iPad in this mode. After completion of the iCloud restore, your lost photos should reappear in the camera roll.

2.    Restore hard drive pictures from an external backup

If you wish to restore deleted photos from a Windows-based device, the best strategy would be to use a previous backup for the purpose. Simply connect the external storage device containing the backup to your computer, navigate to the volume on which the backup is saved, and copy the pictures you need to your local hard drive.

3.    Recover photos from Google Photos

Google Photos lets you to back up your photos to your Google account. Here are steps to recover photos from a backup on Google Photos:

  1. Open Google Photos on your browser
  2. Navigate to find the photos you wish to recover and select them
  3. Thereafter, right-click on them and select the option to Download

This should download the photos to your device’s local storage.

4.    Recover photos from Microsoft One Drive

Similar to Google Photos, some users back up their local files to Microsoft One Drive. This cloud storage can be used to recover photos in case of accidental permanent deletion. Here are the steps you can use:

  1. Sign into Microsoft OneDrive through your web browser
  2. From the menu select Photos
  3. When it opens, navigate to find the photos you want to recover and select them
  4. Thereafter, right-click on them and select the option to Download

What to do if you don’t have a backup?

As you would have noticed, both the above mentioned solutions will work only if you have a backup of the deleted photos. If, however, you don’t have it, recovering deleted photos after being deleted from Recently Deleted may be slightly tricky.
