A saliva drug test, also called a mouth swab test, quickly detects drug presence in oral fluids. Employers, law enforcement, or sports organizations often use it to screen for drug use. The test can detect marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and benzodiazepines.

Uses of mouth swab test

A mouth swab test is used for various purposes, such as:

  • Screening for substance use in workplaces, schools, sports, or law enforcement settings.
  • Monitoring treatment compliance and progress in substance use disorder programs.
  • Detecting prenatal exposure to drugs or alcohol in pregnant women or newborns.
  • Diagnosing or ruling out certain medical conditions, such as salivary gland disorders, oral cancer, or HIV infection.

How to Pass a mouth swab test within 12 hours

One way to beat it is to have only 12 hours or less before the test. Here are some tips on how to pass a mouth swab test in 12 hours:

  • Avoid taking any drugs for 72 hours before the test. This is the most effective way to ensure that your saliva is free from traces of drugs. The mouth swab test can only reliably detect drugs ingested in the last 48–72 hours. If you have been using narcotics regularly, this may not be enough time to clear your system, so you may need to resort to other methods.
  • To prepare for the test, it is recommended to rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide five minutes beforehand. Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that interferes with the swab test’s ability to detect drugs in your saliva accurately. Gulp peroxide before your test and swish it inside your mouth for 30 seconds. Then, spit it out into the sink. Be careful not to swallow any peroxide, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
  • To boost saliva production, try chewing a few pieces of gum. This will dilute the concentration of any drugs in your saliva and change the chemical makeup of your oral fluids, making the mouth swab test less effective. Chew gum for at least 10 minutes before the test and spit it out right before you take the swab. If you have a choice between different flavors, opt for cinnamon or intense citrus flavors, as they can mask the smell of drugs.
  • Suck sour candies to make your saliva more acidic. The more acidic and sugarier your saliva becomes, the more difficult it is for drugs to be detected. So, if you only have 5–10 minutes before you’ll be given a mandatory drug swab test, pop in 2 or 3 sour citrus candies. Suck them (rather than chewing) to get as much acidic citrus flavoring out of the candies as possible. Avoid chocolate or mint candies, as they can leave a residue that the swab can detect.

Conclusion

Please be aware that there is no assurance that the following techniques will succeed and may even harm your health. The only particular strategy to pass a drug test is never to use drugs in the first place. However, if you must undergo a mouth swab test in the next 12 hours, these suggestions may be helpful.

FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about mouth swab tests:

How does a mouth swab test work?

A long Q-tip with a sponge-like material is used to get your spit sample for a mouth swab test. The test only requires sweeping the inside of the cheek or under the tongue with a swab, and either the test subject or the tester can perform it.

What does a mouth swab test detect?

A mouth swab test can detect many substances, such as alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, marijuana (THC), methamphetamine, opioids, and phencyclidine (PCP).

How accurate is a mouth swab test?

The accuracy of the test can be almost 100% if done correctly, varying based on the drug being tested. However, there are a few factors that can affect the accuracy of a saliva test, such as eating or drinking within 10 to 15 minutes of the trial, the quality and quantity of the drug, your age, liver and kidney health, body mass and metabolism, and the amount of water in your body.

How long does it take to get the results of a mouth swab test?

The outcome of a mouth swab test is determined by whether the samples are analyzed in a laboratory or on the spot. Laboratory test results typically take around 24 hours, while home drug testing kits and on-site testing devices yield results in just a few minutes.

How long can a mouth swab test detect drugs after use?

The detection time of a test depends on the type of drug and how often and how much you use it. Substances are typically detectable in oral fluid within about 30 minutes of ingestion. The general detection window in oral fluid is 5 to 48 hours, but it can be longer for people who use a substance frequently or for an extended period. For instance, if you have used marijuana within 24 hours, it can typically be detected through a mouth swab, whereas the detection time for opioids can range from 5 hours to 4 days, depending on the type.

How can I pass a mouth swab test?

The best way to pass a mouth swab test is to stop using drugs immediately, brush your teeth and gums, avoid fatty foods, stay hydrated, and use a detox mouthwash. However, there is no guarantee that these methods will work, primarily if you have used drugs recently or heavily. The only sure way to pass a drug test is to avoid drugs.
