Java has been a popular language since its inception. According to the TIOBE Index of March 2023, it grabs the third position in the list of the top programming languages. Developed by James Goslings in 1995, it is a high-level, object-oriented programming language with a few implementation dependencies.

The most admiring feature of this general-purpose programming language is WORA (Write Once, Run Anywhere). This means a program written and compiled once on a specific system can run on any other Java-enabled system without recompiling.

Java is a very versatile language, as it is used for developing various applications, from desktop-based GUI apps and mobile apps to websites, games, and apps related to the data science domain.

This is the reason why many development companies use Java. Many tech giants, like Google, Microsoft, etc., leverage the language to create amazing software solutions. So, becoming a Java developer offer a wide range of career opportunities.

If you are planning to become a Java developer or Java homework helper but have no idea where to start, this article is for you!

Here, I will walk you through the basic steps you must follow to become a Java developer and land your dream job in a renowned company. Before that, let us discuss some roles and responsibilities of a Java developer.

What is a Java Developer?

A Java developer is a professional responsible for planning, developing, and overseeing Java-based applications. In other words, these programmers primarily collaborate with software engineers, web developers, and other professionals to create various applications, websites, and more using Java.

Additionally, they are in charge of determining potential problems during the development process and proposing solutions.

Primarily, Java developers work in two fields – software/back-end development and mobile app development.

Roles and Responsibilities

Here are a few fundamental tasks every Java developer needs to perform:

  • Creating and deploying testable pieces of code.
  • Performing software development, testing, and deploying.
  • Making changes to existing code or software.
  • Addressing software issues.
  • Collaborating with other team members and stakeholders.

How to Become a Java Developer?

We had a brief discussion about Java developers and their everyday tasks. Let us now throw light on a step-by-step guide to becoming one from scratch.

1. Earn a Bachelor’s Degree

Many companies prefer hiring candidates with bachelor’s degrees in computer science, information technology, or related fields. When you hold a bachelor’s degree, it means you possess an in-depth knowledge of programming concepts.

But, even if you don’t possess a bachelor’s degree, you can opt for an online course or Bootcamp to learn Java from scratch.

2. Learn and Master Core Java

Core Java is nothing but fundamental Java. Initially, get to know about all the essential tools you need to use for Java programming. These include Java Runtime Environment (JRE), Java Development Kit (JDK), and Java Virtual Machine (JVM).

Later, start with the basics of the Java programming language. Learn all concepts and their syntaxes, such as loops, arrays, operators, exception handling, etc. Some other concepts include Java packages, collections, applets, exception handling, overloading, and overriding.

Moreover, ensure to learn object-oriented programming concepts, such as inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction, and encapsulation.

To learn basic Java, you can opt for free resources. The best way to learn the fundamentals in-depth is through Java books. In addition to this, opt for free blog tutorials from Javatpoint, GeeksForGeeks, Tutorialspoint, and W3Schools.

3. Learn Java EE

Java EE stands for Java Enterprise Edition, which supports developing enterprise applications. After you learn the basics, the next step is to learn Java EE. It allows you to develop web applications, websites, and web services using Java.

Some major concepts in Java EE include Servlet, Java Server Pages (JSP), and Web Socket.

To learn Java EE, opting for an online course or Bootcamp is better. This will help you grasp the concepts well and develop practical experience.

4. Earn a Certificate

Having a certification in a specific field indicates that you are well-versed in it and have the knowledge and potential to work in it at an organizational level.

One of the best ways to get a job as a Java developer is to earn certifications. A well-known tech giant, Oracle, offers various Java certifications, as follows:

  • Oracle Certified Junior Associate (OCJA)
  • Oracle Certified Associate (OCA)
  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
  • Oracle Certified Specialist (OCS)
  • Oracle Certified Expert (OCE)
  • Oracle Certified Master (OCM)

Choose a certification based on your areas of interest and level of experience with Java.

5. Frameworks and IDEs

These tools are developer essentials, as they facilitate the development process. A framework provides a basic structure for developing applications. On the other hand, an IDE is a collection of basic developer tools, such as a source code editor, compiler/interpreter, and debugger.

Some widely used Java frameworks are Spring, Hibernate, Google Web Toolkit (GWT), JavaServer Faces (JSF), and Struts. The top picks for Java IDEs are Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA, NetBeans, and JDeveloper.

Choose one framework and an IDE and use them for building your projects. Many companies prefer using Spring and Hibernate. So, better to go with the trend.

6. Build Projects

The next step is to build a few projects to demonstrate your work to potential employers. So, after you learn basic and advanced Java, start implementing those concepts and build projects.

Initially, try developing simple and entry-level projects and then move on to building complex ones. As you do so, you learn various tools and techniques, for example, frameworks, version control systems (VCS), IDEs, etc., and gain hands-on experience working with them.

When developing intermediate-level or advanced-level projects, ensure to build at least one with Servlets and JSP, which are used for web projects.

7. Create a Resume and Work Portfolio

A well-created resume and portfolio can impress employers. Ensure to add your personal details, educational background, achievements, and skills in your resume. More importantly, create it in a way that it aligns with the Java developer job position.

Regarding the portfolio, mention all the projects you have created. If you have hosted them on GitHub, add the respective links. In addition, if you have worked for any client, add it to increase your credibility.

8. Apply for Jobs

Once you are all set, apply for Java developer jobs at various companies. Sign in to different job portals, such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Freshworlds, Naukri.com, Zimyo, and many more. You simply need to upload your resume, fill in a few details, and apply for a Java developer position at different companies.

9. Prepare for Interviews

While your job hunt continues, you can prepare for interviews. The internet is flooded with heaps of interview preparation resources. You can find frequently asked Java interview questions and answers.

In addition, there are many organizations that solely help candidates prepare for acing interviews. They provide all the essential materials and hold mock interviews to help them prepare well for the actual one.

Furthermore, you can even consult your senior to know more about the interviews.

Conclusion

Becoming a Java developer is not an overnight journey. It requires consistent effort and strong passion. Follow the above steps, and your dream of becoming a Java developer will surely turn into reality.

As Java is a popular language and is used by many companies, you will definitely find various job opportunities. The need for Java developers is expected to increase by 19% by 2024. Besides, you can earn sky-high salaries as you gain more experience.

So, having a career as a Java developer is advantageous from a professional and financial standpoint.
