The Houthis in Yemen have launched a massive drone and missile attack on two American destroyers as tensions in the Red Sea rise again.
The attack was launched as the ships transited the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, entering the Gulf of Aden on Monday, a Pentagon spokesman said today.
“The Houthis launched at least eight one-way uncrewed aerial systems, five anti-ship ballistic missiles and three anti-ship cruise missiles at USS Spruance (DDG-111) and USS Stockdale (DDG-106), which engaged all the projectiles, Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Patrick Ryder told reporters on Tuesday. There were no injuries or damage to the two destroyers, or US personnel.
Brigadier General Yahya Saree, the spokesman of the Yemeni armed forces, noted, “in response to the aggression of the United States and the United Kingdom in Yemen and the continued support of the Palestinian and Lebanese people, the missile and drone unit of the Yemeni armed forces, with the help of God Almighty carried out a special military operation that targeted the US aircraft carrier (Abraham) located in the Indian Ocean.

“This operation was carried out with several cruise missiles and drones while the American enemy was preparing to carry out hostile operations targeting Yemen, and the Yemeni armed forces operation neutralized the planned American attack,” he added.
He again noted that the operation of the Yemeni Armed forces will not stop until the Isreali aggression in Gaza stopped.
“Launching an aggression against Yemen will only push the Yemeni Armed Forces to further use their legitimate right to defend and strike all hostile threats in the Red Sea and in any region that Yemeni weapons reach”.
General Saree pointed out that also, in another operation, 2 US destroyers were targeted in the Red Sea with several ballistic missiles and drones. By the grace of God, this operation successfully achieved its goals.
In response, aircraft from USS Abraham Lincoln launched attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen.
This is the second time the two independently-deployed destroyers have come under Houthi fire. The Houthis also launched an attack in late September against the two destroyers, as well as the USS Indianapolis (LCS-17).
Even though the attack by the Houthis was unsuccessful, it clearly shows they are getting stronger and fearful.
Will the American response deter the Houthis, or are they just getting started? Time will tell.
