Chelsea suffered a terrible defeat at home to 20th-place Southampton in the Premier League. The poor blues’ form has seen them drop 10 points from a top-four finish and are also out of all domestic competition this season.
There have been calls for the dismissal of Graham Potter from Chelsea fans following the team’s run of poor results. The latest defeat to Southampton at Stamford Bridge owing to James Ward-Prowse’s excellent free kick in the first half seem to have worsen the situation.
The Chelsea fans booed and jarred at their own players following their defeat to Southampton. However, Graham Potter has admitted that he understands the frustration and concerns of the fans.
What did Graham Potter say after the boos and cheers from the home fans?
Reacting to boos and cheers from the fans at the press conference, he said: “After a 1-0 defeat at home, any criticism you get is understandable.
“I think we’ve had a tough period, and I think we’ve had lots of challenges in terms of integrating young players into the Premier League. While results don’t go your way, it can be tough. That is how it is.
“I’m sure there will be people out there that think I’m the problem, absolutely. I don’t think they’re right, but I’m not arrogant enough to say their opinion isn’t worth articulating.
“My job is to help the team, keep working through a team period, we’ve had to make some changes today, and the truth is we took a step back in our performance in the first half.
“The response in the second half was good, but it wasn’t good enough.”
Asked if there was a request at the dressing room after the 47-year-old was late for his press conference, He added: “There is no conspiracy. I can’t give you that. There is a lot of media, and I believe my colleague has done the media before me. I always come in and speak to you guys, understand the questions, and when we’ve lost 1-0 at home to Southampton, with the greatest respect to the, it is good enough because of the results we’ve had recently.
“The first half is as much my responsibility as anybody’s because the performance wasn’t good. I thought the second-half performance was better and we deserved to score. If we do that, the game changes around. But 1-0 isn’t good and we’re disappointed with that.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has admitted that the team must work together to resolve the situation.
He said after Chelsea’s defeat to Southampton: “Everything is going against us right now, we are in a bad moment, and we have to stick together.
“We have a big squad, a lot of players and a lot of quality, but the things they are not going well,’ he responded, ‘but it is not because we changed six or five or one player; it is more general, we are not doing well, it is clear, and we have to improve.
“It is time to stick together and time to work, work and work.”
