Career
When Frank Abagnale was 15 years old, he forged his credit card and ran away from home. In March 1965, Abagnale went into a resident’s apartment in Mount Vernon, New York, posing as a police officer from Scarsdale, New York, and claimed to be looking into her adolescent daughter. Feeling suspicious, the victim contacted the Mount Vernon police, who discovered Abagnale in possession of a paper police badge and a fake gun. Abagnale was recognized in a lineup by the victim, who then had him arrested and charged with vagrancy. The next day, the court mandated that Abagnale be placed under surveillance at the Grasslands Psychiatric Institute in Westchester County.
Abagnale was detained by the FBI in Eureka, California, in June 1965 on suspicion of car theft after he had taken a Ford Mustang from a neighbor of his father. He had used blank cheques stolen from a family business on the Bronx River Parkway to finance his cross-country journey from New York to California. In addition, Abagnale was accused of pretending to be a US customs officer; however, this accusation was later dismissed.
Pilot
He secured a job as a pilot for Pan American World Airways under the name “Frank Williams” by lying about his age and adding ten years to his driver’s license birthday. They later estimated that by 18, he had flown 1,000,000 miles on over 250 flights, visited 26 different countries, and committed fraud in several of them simply by “deadheading” (an airline term for riding on the plane without working to perform some other task).
He charged the firm for food and hotel stays and had brief romances with flight attendants and other ladies he met. When he had a run-in with the law after disembarking from an aircraft, he thought his cover had been blown. He fled to Atlanta, Georgia, where he found work as a pediatrician.
Because he was hired as a supervising doctor, he was not required to undertake any medical procedures. He could conceal his lack of medical understanding with humor. When a young child was brought in with a leg injury, the gravity of Abagnale’s new position became clear to him. He was able to get the child treated by enlisting the help of some interns.
Lawyer
In Louisiana, he found a new career as a lawyer, impersonating a Harvard law degree and passing the bar exam to obtain a license to practice. He was hired by the attorney general’s corporate law division. Yet, his biography states that he only got stuff for his employer. When he met another lawyer who had graduated from Harvard and began questioning him, he fled again to Utah, where he spent a semester teaching sociology as a teacher’s assistant, having forged a Columbia University degree. Abagnale was caught in France in 1969 when he was 21 years old.
Consultancy firm
He worked a few other jobs before being dismissed when his employers discovered his criminal history. He then approached a bank and offered to show them forgery tactics in exchange for $500 and for them to alert other institutions about his services. That was the beginning of his career as a security consultant, and he created Abagnale & Associates, where he is today CEO and advises firms on fraud.
He continues to work with the FBI and speaks at the Academy. He is also a published author, having written an autobiography titled Catch Me If You Can and works about fraud. He is married with three children and resides in South Carolina. Over 14,000 law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, and enterprises worldwide are now using his fraud prevention systems.
