On Saturday, Georgia authorities detained a guy for alleged kidnapping and violent assault. The individual has unsuccessfully run many political campaigns.
Due to outstanding warrants in Cobb County, Zephaniah Dwayne Baker was taken into custody by the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office at about 12:45 on Saturday.
His arrest warrants included charges for kidnapping, aggravated assault (disfigurement), and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime on the one hand, and battery (Family Violence Act) and third-degree cruelty to children on the other.
The Drug, Gang, and Fugitive Unit of the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals carried out the search warrant.
Baker was taken into custody and will eventually be returned to Cobb County after being processed into the Muscogee County Jail.
The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, Cobb County Police Department, Russell County Sheriff’s Office, and Phenix City Police Department all collaborated in the investigation.
Since 2008, Baker, a Democrat, has made multiple unsuccessful political runs in Georgia.
He originally fell short of Georgia House District 132 candidate Calvin Syrme in 2008. He attempted to become mayor of Columbus twice in vain, losing to Democrat mayor Teresa Tomlinson in 2010 and withdrawing from the race in 2014 when Tomlinson was re-elected.
Baker failed in his attempt to remove Jerry “Pops” Barnes from the Columbus City Council in 2014.
In 2018, Baker ran for mayor again but was defeated by Skip Henderson. He attempted to run for Georgia House District 140 in 2022, but in the Democrat primary, Rep. Teddy Reese prevailed.
