Uncles Jeff and Roger were also boxers, the latter serving as Floyd’s trainer throughout his career. Amateur career
Floyd competed as a national amateur boxer before turning professional, finishing his time in the unpaid ranks with a record of 84 wins against eight losses. He won the Golden Glove Championships in 1993 and then again in 1994 and 1996. In 1996 he also travelled to the Olympic Games, where he scored a bronze medal after losing a semi-final bout in controversial circumstances.
Professional career
If Mayweather enjoyed a successful boxing career in the head guard and vest, it was nothing compared to the success he would enjoy after signing professional terms in 1996, making a winning debut with a second-round stoppage over fellow debutant Roberto Apodaca in Las Vegas.
