Floyd Mayweather Jr is a retired professional boxer who claims he was “the best ever”, and there are millions of fans who agree with that bold statement. Many supporters believe they will see Floyd back in the ring with the leading online betting apps featured at MyTopSportsbooks offering odds on who, where and when Mayweather will fight next. The latest online boxing rumours suggest the fighter, who retired in 2017 after stopping UFC superstar Conor McGregor in the 10th round, could be drawn out of retirement to face YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul while others say we could see a second meeting with Notorious McGregor who has been out of the octagon injured since losing his last bout.
Think you know all there is to know about Mayweather? That would be a fair assumption as he is one of the most popular sportsmen of his generation, covered in newspapers and media outlets worldwide, even when he isn’t boxing or training. Floyd is a man of interest to millions of people across the globe. But all is not as it seems with this pound-for-pound great of the boxing game. This page aims to shed light on one of the most misunderstood celebrities of the modern era.

Mayweather’s birth
Floyd Mayweather Jr – as we know him today – wasn’t always the multi-millionaire sports person with a global reputation and millions of adoring fans. His beginnings were humble. He was born Floyd Joy Sinclair, taking his mother’s name, but that changed not long after his birth when his name was re-registered as Mayweather, dropping the Sinclair.
On the 24th of February 1977, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States, a future star was born. He hails from a family of boxers, with his father being a former professional fighter who had a claim to fame of fighting Sugar Ray Leonard. Uncles Jeff and Roger were also boxers, the latter serving as Floyd’s trainer throughout his career. The sport of boxing was in his blood, and Floyd admitted any other occupation was never an option, his grandmother advising him to stick to the noble art over seeking full-time employment as a young man.
Amateur career
Floyd competed as a national amateur boxer before turning professional, finishing his time in the unpaid ranks with a record of 84 wins against eight losses. He won the Golden Glove Championships in 1993 and then again in 1994 and 1996. In 1996 he also travelled to the Olympic Games, where he scored a bronze medal after losing a semi-final bout in controversial circumstances.
Professional career
If Mayweather enjoyed a successful boxing career in the head guard and vest, it was nothing compared to the success he would enjoy after signing professional terms in 1996, making a winning debut with a second-round stoppage over fellow debutant Roberto Apodaca in Las Vegas. That was just a taste of things to come.
Upon his retirement after beating Ireland’s McGregor at a sold-out T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Floyd posted a perfect 50-0-0 record, with 27 of his victories coming by way of knockout, resulting in a 54% KO average. Floyd won 15 world championship belts during his time in the ring, including the Ring Magazine title in five weight divisions and the lineal championship in four categories. He also left a legacy as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters that ever graced the ancient sport.
Net worth
There has been much speculation regarding the net worth of Mayweather while there’s no shortage of rumours suggesting he has spent all his savings and is now potless. Not true, of course. His net worth has been estimated at $450m, having topped that up with the simple win over McGregor. He has five children, four of which are biologically his and adopted.
